History of the Building
The White House Library and Museum is a reproduction of the original White House Inn. The original White House Inn was located on U.S. 31-W where the BP station is today. The city of White House derived its name from the White House Inn.
The original White House Inn was torn down in the 1950s to make way for a Gulf station.
During the first annual community pancake breakfast in 1984, several people were discussing the possibility of recreating the original White House Inn. The same people saw the need for a new library and archives, and they decided that combining all of these projects into one made sense. A steering committee was formed in January 1985, and groundbreaking was held on October 28, 1985.
The new building opened in 1986 and consists of approximately 3,920 square feet of useable space. The library occupies the first floor. The museum/archives occupies the second floor, and the White House Area Chamber of Commerce occupies the side wing.
